Minutes – Board of Directors

Aspen Hill Civic Association, Inc.,

December 15, 2010

Present: David Polinsky, Florence Polinsky, Bill Shelton, Patty Walker, Linda Robbins, Carol Petzold, Don Becker, and Rusty Embrey

Guests Present: Judy and Paul Silverman

The meeting was called to order by David Polinsky in the absence of the president.  The minutes were accepted without change.

Membership Report:  There were 43 families and 38 single members in November totaling 124.  As of December 15, there are now 56 families and 39 single members for a total of 151.

Finance Report: Account Balance is $4,884 including $177 received in dues and postage expense of $17.60.

A discussion followed regarding the sale of the Robert E. Peary High School site to the present occupant, Berman Hebrew Academy.  Included in the sale are provisions for the county to take back the site if a judge verifies it is needed and a five-year notice is given. The county would pay the price the Hebrew Academy paid plus $8M spent in improvements.  Currently 54 former county schools are not in use by MCPS.   There was a strong feeling that we do not want an unoccupied building in the neighborhood again.   The Maryland Board of Public Works (Governor, State Treasurer and State Comptroller) must also approve the sale.

There was no news regarding the future use of the building on Aspen Hill Road at Connecticut formerly occupied by Vitro and BAE Systems.  It was thought to be owned by Lee Development.   Rusty wrote to the Postmaster General suggesting that all 3 nearby Post Offices be combined in the empty building.  She received a reply from the Southern Maryland Office that the issue is understudy.  Rusty was including the Aspen Hill Post Office in the shopping center, the old site where passports are issued as well as the Twinbrook Post Office, which may need to move with future development of its current site.    Patty will contact Natalie Cantor at the Mid-County Service Center to see if she has any information on the future use of the site.   It was suggested that we invite the owner of the site to a future meeting to discuss plans.

It was noted that the jewelry store at the Northgate Shopping Center is closing as well as the fact that the Super Fresh has already closed.

Civic Association Signs:  Rusty has 20 single-sided signs that were printed by mistake and has verified that 12 double signs still exist.  Carol has about 6 H wires for the signs.   It will cost $1.20 per sign to cover Tuesday on the signs with a Wednesday bumper sticker.  For 44 signs the cost would be $56 which was authorized by a unanimous vote of support.

Cards designed to invite the neighborhood to join the AHCA seem mired in production.  Apparently we need to find a new printer to do the job.

Don Becker reported that we our web site is getting 14 hits per day.

It was suggested that we request that the ̉No Right TurnÓ sign on west-bound Aspen Hill Road at Frankfort be removed since the Vitro/BAE traffic is no longer an issue.   No further action was taken.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Carol Petzold, Acting Secretary
