MINUTES

THE ASPEN HILL CIVIC ASSOCIATION, INC.

19 JANUARY 2010

The meeting was called to order by President Alexandra Minckler at 7:35 P.M. at the Aspen Hill Library.

Present at the meeting were board members: Donald Becker, Robert Clarke, Sharon Dean, Don Eimer, Marguerite Eimer, Rusty Embrey, Dwayne Holmes, Alexandra Minckler, Carol Petzold, David Polinsky, Linda Robbins, and Bill Shelton.

The minutes of the December 2009 meeting were approved as presented by the Recording Secretary, Robert Clarke.

The Treasurer David Polinsky presented a financial report in which he indicated the expenditure of $120 for meeting room rental at the Aspen Hill Library from January 2010 through June 2010 and an income of $98 from membership dues.  The balance in the Treasury as of 19 January 2010 was $5198.36. As of the same date the association has 69 family members and 45 single members for a total of 183 members.

Don Becker reported that he had attended the January 13th meeting of the Greater Glenmont Civic Association [glenmontcivic.org] and then summarized the topics under discussion at that meeting.  Some of them were: the construction of a new mid-county recreation center on Layhill Road at Queensguard to open this summer; the distribution of their civic association flyers through the schools; their search for a community garden area; an 18 January clean up effort of the Turkey Branch at Connecticut Avenue; free programmable thermostats; the planned improvement of the Georgia Avenue and Randolph Road intersection; and the fire stationŐs move from that location to a new facility on Georgia Avenue at Glenallan Avenue. Don finished his presentation by indicating that our association was invited to join in their spring festival to be held 5 June 2010 at the Wheaton Recreation Center. No action was taken regarding this invitation.

Sharon Dean next initiated a general discussion on improving the associationŐs contact with the community which then led into a general discussion on increasing the associationŐs membership rolls.  Decisions were made to (1) have Don Becker take steps to improve the associationŐs website and (2) to have informative jumbo postcards printed in English and Spanish. Linda Robbins volunteered to produce a draft of the proposed card by the 22 February meeting and Dwayne Holmes volunteered to price the costs to have 6,000 printed and to report on his findings at the 22 February meeting.  Carol Petzold then volunteered to provide neighborhood street maps for the purpose of coordinating the distribution of the jumbo postcards.

President Minckler told the board that information on the progress of matters at the Aspin Hill Pet Cemetery was still outstanding.

The meeting finished with a brief discussion on the progress of the new code enforcement legislation. County Council Member Nancy Navarro has given her full support for passage of the legislation and will be speaking about it at the Bauer Recreation Center on 7 February at 3:30 PM.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:28 PM.

The next meeting is scheduled for Monday 22 February 2010 at 7:30 PM at the Aspen Hill Library.

Respectfully Submitted
